CCN’s professional counsellors are real people who live and work in your community. Their goal is to provide solutions tailored to your specific situation. When you make an appointment with CCN, a counsellor will sit down with you to review your financial situation and discuss various options and solutions. Credit Counsellors follow strict rules about confidentiality.
At your first appointment a counsellor will talk with you about your overall financial position, including your income and total expenses, as well as a list of your assets and liabilities. Your counsellor will also look at your debt, how it’s structured, how much it is costing you monthly, and your repayment schedule.Your counsellor will also assess whether or not you have budgeting difficulties or debt issues, and suggest practical ways you can make things better.
Our counsellors specialize in helping you explore realistic options for the payment of debt. These may include consolidation, disposing of some of your assets, or the benefits of reduced interests that come with our Debt Management Program. In some cases we might even suggest a consumer proposal or the kind of relief that comes for people whose best option is bankruptcy.
In your first session you will also spend time talking about how to develop and maintain a sustainable family budget as well as the things you can practically do to pay your debt over a reasonable period of time.
What should I bring to my appointment?
We require the following items:
- Proof of income (i.e. paystub)
- List of monthly expenses and monthly amounts (i.e. rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, recreation, etc.)
- List of creditors, account numbers, and amount owing to each (please bring recent statements if available)
